This Case Study Answers

  • How do you grow a consumer app without chasing vanity metrics?
  • How do you win parents’ trust in a category they don’t trust?
  • How do you lower acquisition costs with organic content?
  • How do you position a challenger brand against Big Tech?

What Happened

The Challenge

Kinzoo builds kid-safe messaging and family apps — Kinzoo Messenger for kids and Kinzoo Together for kids and their grandparents. Parents liked the idea, but the category is defined by Big Tech, and most parents don’t trust any app with their kids.

Growth was being bought rather than earned. Paid campaigns and social were optimized for impressions and installs, which brought in low-intent users who didn’t stick. Kinzoo needed to find the parents most likely to choose it, and grow in a way that lasted.

Positioning: Family Tech Built by Parents

The problem

“Kid-safe” is a claim every app makes. Parents are anxious, overwhelmed by options and wary of products from big tech companies.

The solution

Research mapped parents by how much freedom they give their kids online, and singled out “Lifeguard Parents”: educated, pro-tech and safety-conscious, they want their kids to explore — within safe boundaries. The positioning spoke directly to them: Kinzoo is the family app developer that puts kids before profit, because it’s built by parents. The single-minded proposition became Family tech built by parents, and a brand architecture gave Messenger, Together and future products one shared promise.

From Paid Volume to Organic Intent

Channels That Compound

We rebuilt acquisition around channels that keep paying off. SEO-driven parent guides — explaining new tech, reviewing apps and content by age, and walking through parental controls — doubled blog traffic from organic search (+101%). That unpaid inbound traffic now makes up 39% of all web visits, so more parents arrive from content instead of ads and cost per lead has dropped. Organic social moved from chasing impressions to building an owned audience, with low-cost boosts for top posts. Parent-targeted video became a new channel, with views up 1,659%. For Kinzoo Together, the app that connects kids with their grandparents, we made the brand’s first broadcast spot, a Black Friday ad built for connected TV, YouTube and Facebook, and tested channels aimed squarely at grandparents, like Roku and local radio.

In the app stores we moved spend from brand keywords to broader category terms and cut low-quality targeting. Paid campaigns were optimized for retention, not install volume — and organic installs grew 145% on iOS and 60% on Android.

Content That Drives Engagement

Inside the app, we learned which content kids actually share: whimsical generative-AI art, personality quizzes (“Which dog are you?”), trending memes and recognizable characters — not educational quizzes. Doubling down on it nearly doubled path follows and shares, and lifted shares per active user by a third.

A seasonal campaign timed to the days after Christmas, when parents set up new devices, focused on setup and safety guidance. It produced a predictable spike in new families without hurting retention.

The Result: Durable Growth

In a year, installs grew 34% to 637,000, monthly active users 45% to 220,000 on average, and web sessions 45% to 530,000. Better-qualified families stayed longer, and with more of them arriving through organic search and content rather than paid media, cost per lead came down.
